From Christianity to Seeking Harmonious Living
In 2019, my life took a significant turn as I left the official Christian church and divorced my husband of 15 years. It was during this transformative period that I began searching for a spiritual path that resonated with my newfound understanding of self and desire for enlightenment. In this blog post, I will share my journey and how I landed on African Traditional Religions as a starting point for my exploration. While I am still in search of a settled religious practice, my focus has shifted toward finding a path that enables me to navigate life’s challenges with grace and harmony.
My Departure from the Seventh-Day Adventist Faith
Having devoted many years to the Seventh-Day Adventist Faith, leaving the official Christian church was not an easy decision. However, I felt compelled to follow my inner voice, which was urging me to explore alternative spiritual avenues. Simultaneously, I embraced my authentic self and married the woman of my dreams, further solidifying my need for a spiritual practice that aligned with my evolving beliefs.

Embracing African Traditional Religions
In my quest for a more fitting spiritual path, I found myself drawn to African Traditional Religions. These ancient belief systems recognize the spiritual essence in all things, emphasizing interconnectedness and balance with the natural world. I began studying these traditions, which taught me the significance of ancestral veneration and the power of maintaining a harmonious relationship with the unseen realms.
A Personal Journey: Beyond Organized Religion
While I remain open to the possibility of finding an organized religion that resonates with me, my primary focus has shifted. Instead of searching for definitive answers to life’s existential questions, I now prioritize finding a practice that enables me to navigate life’s ups and downs with peace and resilience. I’ve come to understand that the ultimate purpose of a spiritual journey lies in cultivating personal growth, compassion, and harmony.
Redefining the Concept of God
My evolving beliefs have led me to question the notion of a God who actively intervenes in human affairs. Instead, I embrace the idea that the highest being created us and has since stepped back, allowing us to navigate our individual paths. While I am not an atheist, I have moved beyond the traditional understanding of a personal, interfering deity. My focus has shifted towards developing a personal connection with my ancestors, recognizing their wisdom and guidance as I navigate life’s complexities.

The Path to Harmonious Living
Central to my spiritual journey is the pursuit of harmonious living. I have come to understand that this path involves the cultivation of virtues and the alignment of our actions with principles that promote balance, respect, and interconnectedness. Harmonious living encompasses several core principles:
- Respect for All Beings: It is crucial to honor the inherent worth and dignity of every living being, recognizing their interconnectedness and treating them with kindness and compassion.
- Mindfulness and Presence: Cultivating present-moment awareness allows us to appreciate life’s richness and respond skillfully to the challenges it presents.
- Integrity and Ethical Conduct: Striving to act with integrity, honesty, and fairness builds trust and nurtures harmonious relationships with others.
- Gratitude and Contentment: Fostering a sense of gratitude for life’s blessings and finding contentment in the present moment nurtures inner peace and reduces attachment to desires and expectations.
- Embracing Impermanence: Recognizing the impermanent nature of all things allows us to adapt, flow, and find equanimity in the face of life’s inevitable changes.
Living harmoniously is a lifelong practice that requires patience, self-reflection, and continuous effort. Striving to live harmoniously offers numerous benefits to individuals and society as a whole. By embracing the principles of harmonious living, we cultivate inner peace, reduce conflict, and promote overall well-being.
Living harmoniously fosters a sense of interconnectedness and empathy, allowing us to develop deeper connections with others and the world around us. It encourages us to recognize that our actions have ripple effects and that we have a responsibility to contribute positively to the greater web of life.

Practicing harmonious living also helps us navigate life’s challenges with greater resilience. By embracing impermanence and letting go of rigid attachments, we become more adaptable and open to change. This flexibility allows us to flow with the ups and downs of life and find greater equanimity amidst uncertainties.
Moreover, harmonious living promotes a sense of gratitude and contentment. By cultivating an appreciation for the present moment and the blessings in our lives, we shift our focus away from constant striving and discontent. This shift in perspective allows us to find joy and satisfaction in the simple moments and experiences that might otherwise be overlooked.
In striving for harmonious living, we contribute to a more compassionate and harmonious society. Our actions inspire others to consider their own paths of harmonious living, creating a ripple effect of positive change. By embodying principles such as respect, kindness, and ethical conduct, we become agents of harmony and catalysts for collective well-being.

While my spiritual journey may not have led me to a specific organized religion, it has guided me toward the pursuit of harmonious living. I have discovered that the ultimate purpose lies not in subscribing to rigid dogmas, but in cultivating personal growth, compassion, and interconnectedness. It is a journey that continues to unfold, and I embrace the uncertainty with curiosity and an open heart.
In conclusion, the path to harmonious living transcends the confines of organized religion. It is a way of being that fosters compassion, respect, and balance. By embracing the principles of harmonious living, we can navigate the complexities of life with grace, find contentment in the present moment, and contribute to a more harmonious and compassionate world.
